Kells Celtic faced title favourites Square 2nds in a wet and wild Grange looking to build on their strong start to the season after picking up 4 points from their first two games away from home and that was exactly what happened.
Kells had the better of opening exchanges with the 3-man defence standing resolutely with the excellent trio of Lewis O’Donnell, Seanie Curran and Chris Darga dictating the midfield with some excellent passing and movement. Conor Kirwan and Ryan Halpin were marauding the flanks creating opportunities and the breakthrough came before halftime when the ball fell to Paddy Murray in the box and he finished with a 30mm screamer!
Half-time 1-0
Kells continued to to control the middle of the park at the start of the 2nd half but found themselves pegged back when a well worked corner routine was finished at the near post by the visitors.
The lead was restored when Paddy Murray sprung the offside trap and tucked home from the edge of the box with aplomb. Square pushed hard for an equaliser but it was Kells who had the final say when a barnstorming run from Seanie Curran was unceremoniously halted in the box and Chris Darga tucked home the resulting penalty. There was still time for the visiting no.9 to lob the Kells keeper from the restart only for the ref to call it back as he hadn’t restarted the game.
Another home game next Saturday will give this evolving side a chance to build further on their strong start.
