Division 1: Kells Celtic 2 Square United 0

7 May 2022 by Alan Tormey

Will the real Kells Celtic please stand up…

After 2 league games without a goal or a point, Kells hit the winning trail in some style tonight despite the modest scoreline.

With a number of changes in personnel and the first outing for the new formation being employed, one could have been apprehensive coming into the game tonight but all fears were quickly allayed as Kells took the game to Square quite literally from the kick-off.

Leading from the back, Captain Craig Mooney was dictating play into the dynamic trio in the middle shepherded by the returning Oisin Smith and driven by the boundless energy of Youth player Lewis O’Donnell and Cian (Dusty) McManus. The running off markers from the front two of Kuba Bidzinski and Ryan Farnham was opening up the opposing defence at will and Ryan Farnham outpaced the defence to give Kells a deserved lead early in the 1st half after superb play from wingback Carl Jordan.

Square came into the game and had a few free kicks around Kells box but it was Farnham again who could have doubled the lead when he tore clear only to lob both keeper and crossbar.

Half-time 1-0

Kells continued to cause problems running channels and doubled the lead when a ball across the box found another Youth player in Kuba Bidzinski who swivelled and poked home from 10 yards.

Kells started running replacements in but maintained a solid shape and had a number of chances to add to the lead but settled for 2 goals, 3 points and a solid disciplined performance.

Special word of thanks to Mick O’Brien for the help with preparations both midweek and this evening. Next up is the visit of neighbours Torro next Friday.
